Baleba has passed his United medical and signed a five-year deal, with the announcement expected today

Sky Sports News reported at 20:28 BST on Sunday that Carlos Baleba had passed his United medical and put his signature to a five-year contract; the Daily Mail's Simon Jones filed the same claim two hours later, putting the £65m plus £5m fee on the record, per the Mail. Both put the medical in the past tense, independently. That separates this from every deal we have called settled before either club spoke: Andrey Santos's medical was reported taken, and his move went through; every Ederson medical claim stayed in the future tense, and that move collapsed. Official word is still missing. United's news index carries no Baleba item, and Brighton have filed nothing on a departure.

Our read

Our read: two independent newsrooms placing the medical in the past tense put this deal on Santos's evidential footing, not Ederson's, even without a club announcement.

The Briefing

United hold a further 12-month option on Luke Shaw's contract, per the Evening Standard, which eases the urgency on the club's left-back search.

Simon Stone

Simon Stone, tier 1, credibility 88 on our own scale.

Simon Stone works United for BBC Sport, tier one, credibility 88. His caution stood out this weekend: while faster outlets called Baleba's medical done, he held to the conditional until two other newsrooms caught up, and he is still the most careful voice on Amad's injury. That restraint is the record worth reading him for.

Club Pulse

Ownership: quiet (thin sample)

Manager: quiet (thin sample)

First Team: -15, +23 on a sample of 10

Academy: quiet (thin sample)

Women: quiet (thin sample)

First team mood swung on Baleba's reported medical and signature; every other layer, ownership, manager, academy and women, stayed too quiet to score this cycle.

Fan Voice

Reaction to the Baleba deal split down the middle: one reader questioned the outlay, another says he fears nobody.

I’ve been critical of this transfer from the beginning. I wanted a different midfield profile and questioned whether £65m plus £5m was the best use of the budget.

@Udewalter_, sentiment neutral

One thing I absolutely love about Baleba is that he’s never scared of anyone.

Patrick Dorgu

3 mentions on the day's count, sentiment negative, trend stable.

Patrick Dorgu drew three mentions after his half-time substitution at Hull. Carrick framed it as tactical rather than personal, calling him a player the club rates highly. Three mentions is a real but modest sample, worth watching rather than reading as a verdict.

Carrick on withdrawing him at half time: "It was nothing personal. Pat's a fantastic player. We love him to bits. But sometimes you have to make decisions."

Quote worth keeping

Alan Shearer, the BBC pundit and former Newcastle striker, gave the sharpest verdict on United's fitness after Saturday's defeat at Hull City.

I haven't seen Manchester United in pre-season. I saw them in this game and they didn't look fit, they didn't look ready to play 90 minutes of intense, high pressure, high-energy football.
