Carrick has four forwards for three places against City: 'It's not an easy decision'
United beat Sabah 4-0 in the Champions League, leaving Carrick with four forwards, Šeško, Cunha, Mbeumo and Rashford, for three places against City on Sunday. Asked directly whether picking a front three is difficult, he named none of the four.
Manchester United's own transcript has him saying it is not an easy decision, but definitely one he prefers, and that the squad needs to understand players will sometimes start and sometimes finish games across a season. The BBC's account of the same answer differs in wording and length beyond the opening sentence, and neither record is being treated here as the fuller one. No side has been named for Sunday.
Our read
Club Pulse's first-team score fell 14 points to 27 even after four goals and a clean sheet, evidence of an audience already more interested in Sunday's team sheet than Thursday's scoreline.
The Briefing
The Guardian sets Sunday's derby as the 199th meeting, Carrick chasing United's 82nd win against Maresca, who has won all four games since succeeding Guardiola in the summer.

Receipts
Four calls from the summer, graded against what actually happened.
Elliot Anderson, 25 June
beat reportersigned elsewhere
Per David Ornstein: Manchester City agree to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £116m, guaranteed with no add-ons.
Predicted Agreement. Resolved Done.
Right on the club, right on the money, and it ended United's pursuit in a day. The BBC put the package at a club-record £116m the following morning and reported that United had been pressing before City moved. It was the first of the summer's midfield disappointments: Mateus Fernandes then went to Tottenham, and Alex Scott stayed at Bournemouth. United's eventual signing, Carlos Baleba, cost £65m guaranteed. Graded 7 September 2026.
Carlos Baleba, 7 July
beat reportercompleted
Per BBC Sport: United pull out of Baleba pursuit at £70m ask.
Predicted Deal off. Resolved Signed.
We reported United pulling back in early July at a £70m ask, and on 28 July the BBC had them cooled on his price. That call did not hold: on 19 August United lodged a first offer of £60m guaranteed plus £5m in add-ons, reported by David Ornstein at 08:50 and by Simon Stone, who wrote that it will not be enough. Brighton did accept, at £65m guaranteed plus £5m: the fee was agreed on 21 August, and on 23 August Sky Sports News and the Daily Mail both reported that Baleba had passed a medical and signed a five-year contract. Both clubs announced it on 25 August: a five-year contract to June 2031 with an option for a further year, and neither club stated a fee. Updated 26 August.
Manu Kone, 17 July
aggregatordid not progress
Per Rio Ferdinand, citing Fabrizio Romano: United have agreed a £45m fee with Roma for Manu Kone.
Predicted Agreement. Resolved Deal off.
The most specific claim made about United's midfield search all summer, and it was wrong. A fee agreed with a selling club is a checkable thing, and no other reporting ever placed one: Fabrizio Romano, named as the origin, had rebutted the agreement framing repeatedly in the fortnight before and after. Kone did not join United, no bid was reported as lodged, and the window shut on 1 September. Graded contradicted at the time and it stayed that way. Graded 7 September 2026.
Lewis Hall, 25 August
beat reporterdid not progress
Per BBC Sport (Simon Stone): Newcastle do not want to sell Hall, and it would take a huge offer to persuade them otherwise.
Predicted Deal off. Resolved Deal off.
Accurate, and early enough to be useful. Fabrizio Romano had said the same on 20 August, United wanted Hall but could not proceed because Newcastle would not sell, and the Guardian reported the same day that talks had hit the rocks over United's reluctance to pay over the odds. The Manchester Evening News reported on 30 August that United had given up. Hall stayed at Newcastle and United signed no left-back. The one figure to treat carefully is the asking price: it was put at above £68m, at more than £75m and simply as 'a huge offer' by three different outlets in a week, and no bid was ever made to test any of them. Graded 7 September 2026.
Right on Anderson and Hall, wrong on Kone, and we changed our mind on Baleba before he signed.
