Marcus Rashford came off at Fulham with an issue, and is in the England squad

Marcus Rashford came off in the second half of Sunday's 1-1 draw at Fulham, and Michael Carrick could offer nothing firmer. Per beIN Sports at Craven Cottage, the head coach said they had to bring him off with what he called a bit of an issue, and when asked whether Rashford was alright, said he was not sure. United say he was hurt early and later fouled by Timothy Castagne, and name no condition, as is their habit.

Thomas Tuchel had already named him in the England squad for the Nations League fixtures before any of it happened, with Kobbie Mainoo, also substituted late at Craven Cottage, alongside him. Whether Rashford plays any of them is what supporters will be watching for.

Our read

Our read: an officially confirmed issue with no named condition is exactly the evidence state the ledger allows, nothing more.

The Briefing

Matheus Cunha said Fulham had more energy than United after the break; Carrick, per the club, said the way United finished did not look that way to him.

Scholes scores twice on debut

Paul Scholes, then 19, scored both goals on his competitive United debut, a 2-1 League Cup second round first leg win at Port Vale. Attendance 18,605.

A debut worth remembering on this date. A nineteen year old came into a League Cup tie at Port Vale and scored both goals in a 2-1 win, in front of 18,605. It was the start of a career that ran to eleven Premier League titles, though nobody there knew that at the time.

Laurie Whitwell covers United for The Athletic and has been the highest-volume beat writer on the club in our window, 363 attributions across 283 distinct stories in the last 30 days.

That kind of output invites a fair question about depth, but Whitwell's bylines are the ones that reliably trigger coverage elsewhere rather than follow it, which is the tell of an institutional reporter rather than an aggregator. Fan Voice

Two posts from around Craven Cottage, one sent as Fulham took the lead and one posted after Michael Carrick gave his own verdict on the performance that followed.

It was coming. You can’t play this passive in the premier league.

The fact that Carrick thinks we showed energy and played well is shocking. Any decent board reacts to this and makes changes.

Player in Focus

Harry Maguire

3 mentions on the day's count, sentiment negative, trend falling.

Harry Maguire is not part of Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the Nations League fixtures and will train at Carrington through the break instead, per Read Man Utd. He spoke for the dressing room after the Fulham draw anyway, telling the club the response was better than a week earlier and asking supporters to look past a weekend that gave them little. Three mentions since Sunday is a small book to read a reaction from, but the direction is falling.

Told the club United are not far away, hours before Read Man Utd reported he will stay at Carrington while England play.
